Alimony: How Much and for How Long?
Answer: Spousal support, Maintenance, and Alimony mean the same thing. It is awarded to the financially dependent spouse when it is appropriate and when the other spouse is able to afford paying it.
The factors that the court considers when determining the entitlement, amounts, and duration of maintenance include:
- The age, health, property (including the property awarded in the divorce), income, needs, and future earning ability of both parties;
- The length and standard of living of the marriage; and,
- The time and funds needed for the party seeking maintenance to acquire the appropriate education to become self-supporting, and the extent, if any, of his or her contribution to the education and licensure of the other party.
